The Bowler, as it was named then, was an affordable and competitive answer to many people’s requirements. Tomcat Motorsport was formed in 2001 to take over production of the Tomcat vehicle from Drew Bowler when he moved to concentrate on the renowned Bowler Wildcat. I drove it for a year before the MoT ran out. Tomcat Motorsport was started by Paul Williamson (who incidentally owns the oldest production Bowler (Tomcat) and still competes with it when work allows) and Steve Wells (who at one time owned number2 Bowler). At this time there were only two wheelbase lengths available with 88” and 100”, although a handful of 80” Bowler Tomcats had been built as one offs.

The Tomcat was originally designed by Drew Bowler as an 88 inch wheelbase vehicle for Association of Land Rover Clubs (ARC) events. The building work to make space for a shed (for more storage for old Range Rover or new Tomcat parts) is progressing. I can get some ideas from these off road racers for when I build my Tomcat even though mine off-roader won't be used for racing. This may sound a bit soft, but my Tomcat will be used mainly on the road and not raced off-road, so some safety features will be important (in addition to the strength of the original Range Rover chassis). In July 2003, Steve and Paul along with a third partner, Ian Frame, bought a company to produce their own fibreglass bodywork. He also pursued a career as a motorsport journalist.

The later vehicle was named the Bowler Wildcat and the earlier one became the Bowler Tomcat, however both vehicle types still shared the same skeleton frame design. I have started to strip the Range Rover down. This meant that he needed to distinguish between his original vehicle, which utilised a Range Rover chassis, and his next development of a tubular chassis based racer. There is lots of rust all over the Range Rover with the worst being found on the upper and lower tailgate (no surprises there). The 80 is built to excel in trials where its short wheelbase, commanding driving position and low weight can really tell.
