Weaver/Picatinny mounts use a clamping system, just like a dovetail rail, but also make use of a bar which drops into one of the slots on the rail.
However, scope mount manufacturers usually build their mounts to Weaver standard so they will happily fit both. I got over 2 million hits. Both the rails are very similar to each other, and many people consider them as the same. Seems the objection is that the objection is the base is too wide for airguns (11mm dovetails), and I'd have to agree -- but I use a Dovetail to weaver adapter, and it seems to be working just fine.
Does anyone make a dovetail adaptor that fits on a picatinny?

I believe the name originally came from the fact that the triangular shape of the joint resembles the tail of a dove. Whereas the earlier Weaver design is based on a low wide dovetail, the Picatinny variation has a more pronounced angular section.

B-Square makes a 13.5mm mount for the Webley Patriot that will work because it has the cross key to mate in one of those three scalloped grooves on the top of your receiver.

(Most centerfires do come d/t'd for bases due to their higher recoil levels. Any modifications to a firearm should be performed by a licensed gunsmith only. If I get a weaver rail and a weaver mount, I'm betting they fit fine ;-) I see the other advantage of the picatinny, but, like I said, I don't see an adjustable and that was imperative to provide the solution I needed. Real Weaver rings are not found in the airgun community that often.
Each NATO state ratifies a STANAG and implements it within their own military. • Weaver was developed earlier than Picatinny. Before the development of this rail mount, people had to tighten screws to attach telescopic sights to their rifles.
In the 1960s, they created a new type of scope mount for heavier weapons. The ring looks like it was made for something slightly smaller than the weaver rails, despite being advertised as a weaver ring. (I forget who was what) you can get a grab with a missmatch but not the friction that a correct fitting offers, and damage is likley.
