The most notable changes to the engine are its all-new cylinder head and updated bore-and-stroke configuration. Hi-compression: 1.5 turns out Kawasaki went with a larger 78.0mm bore (from 77.0mm) and shorter 52.2mm (from 53.6mm) stroke.
Thankfully, it has considerable adjustability and great mapping options. For us, it seems more like a gimmick for a 250F engine. No one cared for the mellow map.

The MSRP of the KX250 was upped from $7749 to $7799 for 2020. Most riders wanted more preload than the recommended 106mm of sag, eventually settling around 100. Even there, Kawasaki was smart to use some existing parts.
The chassis is mostly unchanged with a few exceptions. The Kayaba forks on the KX250 work much like the SSS forks on the YZ250F.
It was easy to ride for lower-level riders. Seven to eight kicks does the trick.
The Showa wasn’t bad, but almost everything else in the class was a little better. We tried going from a 50-tooth rear sprocket to a 51. It’s plush on small impacts without being divey in the turns. It was interesting that two different styles of engines were so similar when measured against each other. It had more low-rpm torque than anything in the class. The followers themselves are straight out of a ZX10. All of these are very smart, economical changes.
Does finger-follower valve actuation sound familiar?
To increase top-end power, a higher valve lift is needed. Suspension: The new KYB suspension is a step in the right direction for Kawasaki in 2020, but we felt it was slightly unbalanced coming from the showroom floor. The black coupler will also be friendlier to riders that are new to 250F’s and will not have as much rpm response to scare them off.
This one uses KYB components, and the closed-cartridge fork has two coil springs. Despite that, there were so many things that were right about the bike. There is no doubt that Kawasaki’s old gearbox, maximized for the previous low-to-mid engine, doesn’t work well with the new top-end powerband. The length of the head pipe was shortened by 30mm, and the hydro-formed joint pipe now has a reverse taper design.
It lasts longer than last year’s but won’t stand the test of time. First, Kawasaki switched from Showa components to Kayaba. (4) Starting.
These settings were agreed upon by all testers that weighed from 150-190 pounds and varying from Novice-Pro.
Do not order another OEM chain guide that will just wear out again.

First of all, Kawasaki’s plan to find more peak power was an absolute success. The rev ceiling isn’t any higher; it still signs off around 13,500 rpm, but now that seems low, simply because the bike is still getting better and better right up to that point—then it just stops. ASK THE MXPERTS: ARE BROKEN HUSQVARNA AIRBOXES COMMON? The old SFF fork was just that—old.

Rebound: 17 clicks out The reason there cheaper is Kawi tends to flood the market. It’s more of a rear-wheel steering bike like a Yamaha. Now, it’s a little dead down low, but where the old bike was flattening out at around 10,000 rpm, the new bike is really taking off.

The low-end grunt of the YZ250F would get the blue bike up to speed quicker than the KX250. This will put more weight on the front and will keep the bike from standing up in the corner.
We had one minor quibble about the forks, and that was a harsh spot about 3/4 of the way through the stroke, especially for heavier riders. How do we know?
The brakes are strong, and the clutch pull is light.
If you feel this “stiff” feeling, go stiffer. The new KYB fork is more what we expect in 2020. Hard grips

A lot is riding on the 2020 KX250’s much-improved engine and suspension package. The most important is a switch in suspension makers.

The 2020 Kawasaki KX250 is a big departure from that routine. (2) Chain guide. The real decision boiled down to the aggressive map versus the standard map, both of which had good qualities. In hard-packed, technical turns, you don’t steer through with neutral throttle like you could before. That’s why it didn’t get the electric start, a hydraulic clutch, a large-diameter handlebar or fancy new methods of changing the programming.
And considering that it has already won a lot of races, that’s a very good thing. The best solution? To do this requires a very aggressive cam profile, which puts tremendous strain on the basic bucket-on-shim system. With the new KYB shock, a longer link was used to create a longer stroke. The KX250’s Showa components were traded in for Kayaba.
It hasn’t won shootouts in recent years for one reason alone: it wasn’t fast enough. If you like the 7/8 sized Renthal handlebar, but find it too tall for your liking, go with a 983 Renthal 7/8 bar as that bend will be slightly lower and flatter.
We haven’t liked any of the stock maps the last three years.
